About FCS

2011-2012 School Year

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

My name is Constance Gavin and I would like to welcome you to my Family and Consumer Science class!  I am looking forward to meeting new students and working with those students that I taught last year.  I’d like to introduce myself and explain a little bit about how the Family and Consumer Science program works at CMS.

This will be my fifth year teaching and my fourth year at Colchester Middle School.  I grew up in the tiny little town of Bethel, Vermont.  I received my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Vermont (UVM) in Family and Consumer Science Education with a minor in Nutrition. While at UVM, I completed a study abroad program, in Brisbane, Australia.  Upon graduating from UVM, I moved to New York City, NY where I received my Master’s degree in Health Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Learning about the different topics in Family and Consumer Science can be very exciting, and my goal is to introduce students to new ideas and ways of thinking as well as to guide students to higher levels of understanding! The FCS program is designed to support 21st Century Skills and all classes are in accordance with the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities, Vermont Department of Education Family and Consumer Science Grade Expectations and National Family and Consumer Science Standards. Currently the FCS program at CMS is only a part time program and is therefore only available to some students.

More information, including projects and valuable study resources, can be found here on my website.

Parents and guardians can get involved with FCS by asking students what they are learning about in class, checking student grade status on Power School and by using the online resource links provided in this website. We always love knowing professionals in the field. Parents in professions related to the FCS topics are invited to email Ms. Gavin to information and resource share.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your progress in Family and Consumer Science class.  The best way to reach me is through at gavinc@csdvt.org.

Also of note, I am the District Wellness Coordinator and the chair of the Wellness Committee. For more information about Wellness in the district please follow my CSD Wellness Website link.

Sincerely,
Ms. Constance Gavin, M.A.
